The DigiHub is a non-profit organization created in 2014 that provides entrepreneurs with training, workspace and start-up space for their business. Designed to promote action and consultation, the DigiHub offers the entire ecosystem necessary to carry out the various business ideas related to digital development. Companies operating within the DigiHub come from a variety of fields such as IT, marketing, technology and culture.
Based in downtown Shawinigan, the DigiHub actively participates in the advancement of the digital economy of Québec. It has become a vital player in its field not only because of its ideal geographical location between Montréal and Québec City, but also for all the industry leaders who revolve around it.
In the 1900s, several processing industries and manufacturing industries established themselves in the Shawinigan region. The economy then was based on these industries because of the accessibility and proximity of hydropower.
This regional agglomeration of 4 dams quickly made Shawinigan the Canadian energy capital. Even today, this term is referring to the Shawinigan area because of its hydroelectric potential.
At the time, the presence of the Belgo Pulp and Paper Mill and the Alcan Aluminum Smelter boosted the regional economy. This strong economy the economic locomotive of the region for a long time.
Since 2000, the Shawinigan area has been shifting its economic development, supporting the strategic development of innovative companies. The new regional development orientation prioritizes technological innovation, and creates a mobilization favouring start-ups with innovative projects, such as DigiHub and Data-Hub.
